Wow already 1 week in Self Isolation

Can you believe we have already been in our house for seven days – I have to say that it actually doesn’t feel that long. Some times I feel like weekends drag on and now here we are seven days, all five of us, home.

The first two days we had lots of fighting, I tried to stop it, then gave up. I was done, we have all been there. They were no longer listening to me so I let it happen. Looking back I think that may have helped, I only intervened when there was blood. It was interesting to sit back and see how far they let it escalate on their own. Thankfully in our house, the eventually figured it out.

Being a little nieve and buckling to social media pressure I thought we might have a schedule. At least some structure as I do know that kids are better with structure, but unfortunately I just can not do it! It is not me…maybe that is my ADHD 🙂

What does our day actually look like…not just what I post on Facebook. Most days start with us getting up and the kids going straight to technology, which is usually Minecraft, NHL hockey or the newly found Facebook Messenger for kids. This is when I enjoy my coffee, catching up on the daily news and just sitting in quiet. Eventually, the kids ask for breakfast, which I have made them get themselves. I think at 7 and 9 they are more than capable of getting cereal and toast. I am no longer doing everything and cleaning everything – I remind them this is not a free ride! I have this grand idea that after breakfast we will get into our routine…but that has yet to happen. We have breakfast then back to technology or just playing. Sometime around 11:00 I finally get my but in gear and try to organize the kids. One day this meant a little bit of writing, one day it was Duolingo and sometimes it is Cosmic Kids Yoga or playing in the backyard.

After lunch is when we finally get organized to have between 30-60 min of more organized school time, but really, it is mostly fun as they are excited to write stories to share. Then we go back to playing, by now in the day they are done with technology and they are just playing. I try to wrangle them back to 15 min increments of some structured iPad time, with DuoLingo, Protegy, IXL math, etc. However, I will admit I only do this if they are being loud when I want to listen to the news or they are screaming.

I think one fun thing from this is the number of texts that they are sending to grandma and grandpa 🙂 I sure hope they have lots of patience – thanks, mom and dad!

I hope we can do more baking and science experiments, but for now, that involves a lot of cleaning at the end and we are still getting our house tidy so they will wait for a few more days till I am ready.

Dinner comes quickly and then off to bed.
